@Thedoggoking: So, the reason this is such a point of confusion in the readers is because I as a writer failed to properly establish the conflict with the egg as a whole. This should have been explained completely in chapter one, but in early chapter one I just frankly wasn't paying enough attention and not taking enough care. So I do take responsibility for you all not really understanding this. This will eventually be explained thoroughly in-comic, should've been explained right from the get go, but I'll at least explain now to alleviate some confusion. Gonna make this an author comment too.

Essentially, pokemon eggs that are meant to live in specific environments must be in those environments in order to hatch. This includes earthen eggs that need to grow up in the desert, water elemental eggs that should be living by water, dragon eggs that need to hatch without any other pokemon nearby, et cetera. A few hours from hatching, these type of eggs will escentially check the environment for the correct environmental cues that will indicate that they're in the right environment. The earthen egg would sense for sandy surroundings and very low humidity, the water egg would sense for high humidity and contact with water (along with sensing for the correct salinity based on species), the dragon egg would sense for carbon dioxide, body heat, perspiration, and other chemical compounds left by other pokemon, et cetera. If the egg does not sense the environmental cues to indicate it's in the right environment, it will abort. The fetus will terminate and not hatch.

This is why Cedar is bringing the egg to the desert. It's indicative by the egg's appearance that it needs a dry, sandy environment. (The types of eggs that will terminate in the way I just explained are usually marked in a way that you can tell what environment it needs.) If Cedar does not get the egg to the desert at least a few hours before it hatches, it'll die. Her dad did explain such to a small amount in chapter one, if you're curious to look back!

Press on mate, embrace the lil hatchling and continue your quest...

Reply MouseWithADinosaurTail, May 16th, 2019, 7:38 pm

@AssaultBird2454: Well, the problem is if the egg gets too close to hatching in the wrong environment, it'll most likely be stillborn.. soooo....

Reply silversalandit110, May 23rd, 2019, 3:36 pm

@MouseWithADinosaurTail: Yes, but you would not kill the egg this early would you, mam?

Reply MouseWithADinosaurTail, May 23rd, 2019, 3:37 pm

@silversalandit110: It's a nuzlocke comic, I have no choice of who I do and don't kill ;;>w<

Reply silversalandit110, May 23rd, 2019, 4:07 pm

@MouseWithADinosaurTail: Oh well. It would be sad to see if it died this early.

(golly if only you knew someone who knows how to fly, Cedar. Like maybe someone you just met recently?)

Enable no-clip Cedar, it's the only way.

Looking at both the comic and the author comment, this does not look good.

Anyways i dont think a beach will suit the egg for it to survive. Sure there's sand and all that but its a beach...beaches have water, thus causing humidity levels to rise quite a bit... the egg (based on the author comment) will need a dry area (low humidity) and due to water being around, the egg, by logic, will not hatch in a beach.
Im sorry to say that...

That was a mouthful

@Z-Gamer007: Yeah, you're correct about that!

I made a poll to let viewers handle their nerves in these difficult last moments. All answers are appriciated.

Do the poll here:

Also, I like how you are building foundations into the pokemon world. Those egg hatching rules do explain how certain pokemon develop own societies and why so few end up "adventuring".

Reply MouseWithADinosaurTail, May 24th, 2019, 6:05 am

@Dotpoint: Ooh! Publish the results of that poll when you get them, I'm curious too!

@MouseWithADinosaurTail: my i ask what is a nuzlocke?

Reply MouseWithADinosaurTail, May 24th, 2019, 6:09 am

@jaketheflareon231: A nuzlocke is a self-imposed hard mode of a pokemon game. Rules can be modified, but the two basic rules of a nuzlocke run are:

1. You can only catch the first pokemon you encounter in each route.
2. If a pokemon faints, it is dead, and you must release it.

But most people add lots of other rules on top of that to make it harder or more fun!

I'm wondering if the sand in Dewford would count as close enough to a desert, since it's technically the next stop in one's Hoenn journey.
